Hiking open on Manitou Incline near Colo. Springs

April 2, 2013

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and Rep. Doug Lamborn attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for it Monday. As many as 500,000 people a year had been hiking the incline before it legally opened to the public Feb. 1.

The Manitou Incline is an abandoned cable car route that rises more than 2,000 feet in a mile. Railroad ties serve as makeshift steps.

Because of an old railroad law, Congress had to step in so the public could hike the trail legally.

The two cities agreed to manage the trail. The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/16s7xtz ) the Incline Friends group is raising $1 million for repairs.
