Colorado Delegation Urges Air Force to Consider Colorado Springs for New Cyber Numbered Air Force

June 29, 2009

Washington, Nov 3, 2008 -

WASHINGTON, DC – The Colorado Congressional delegation sent a letter this week to Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley, urging the Air Force to consider the Colorado Front Range Region as a potential site of the headquarters for the new 24th Air Force, a Numbered Air Force dedicated to protecting our military’s sensitive cyber assets.

The new Numbered Air Force will fall under Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) which is headquartered at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs. Additionally, Colorado Springs is home to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)/United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). Locating the 24th Air Force in Colorado Springs would provide many advantages because of the proximity to Buckley Air Force Base in nearby Aurora, as well as other military centers and already developed resources and infrastructure at area military installations.

The delegation writes, "Basing 24th Air Force within close proximity to its major command will certainly enable easier operations across the space and cyberspace domains. The technical and educational expertise Colorado offers is second to none and will only help to promote the career development required by the Air Force."

The delegation continues, "In addition to Peterson AFB hosting AFSPC and NORAD/USNORTHCOM, Schriever AFB is home to the 50th Space Wing and Space Innovation Development Center, which is tasked with the rapidly prototyping, fielding and exploiting integrated air, space, and cyberspace capabilities. Colorado Springs is also home to Cheyenne Mountain AFS and the Air Force Academy. Nearby Buckley AFB in Aurora is a leader in the Air Force’s space defense and houses the Aerospace Data Center."

Members of the Colorado delegation are prepared to provide their full assistance to the Air Force as it determines a location for the new Cyber NAF.
