Washington D.C. - Congressman Doug Lamborn has cosponsored H.R. 2988, the Protecting American Lives Act, which will protect law enforcement officials who choose to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers from any legal penalty or liability, including Colorado’s radical new sanctuary law. This legislation would also make it illegal for a state or local government to fire or discriminate against one of its law enforcement officers for following federal immigration laws.
Last month, Colorado’s liberal Democrats passed a reckless law that prohibits law enforcement from cooperating with ICE detainers. This dangerous law will force Colorado law enforcement to choose between cooperating with federal law enforcement or following a state law that risks innocent lives and federal funding.
In addition to the immunity provisions, the bill also clearly defines sanctuary jurisdictions and prohibits sanctuary policies that violate federal law, prohibits federal law enforcement funds from going to states and cities that do not comply with detainer requests and increases the minimum mandatory prison sentence for illegal re-entry from two years to five years.
ICE detainers are notices issued to state and country prisons requesting that a facility delay the release of a criminal alien that ICE has an arrest warrant for. This process is supposed to help keep criminals off the street and allow ICE officers to safely carry out their mission. Sadly, Colorado Democrats have put their radical ideology above safety and the rule of law by prohibiting cooperation with ICE.
