Washington, D.C. - Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on House Concurrent Resolution 83, a War Powers Resolution. On January 3, President Trump ordered a strike killing Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Quds Force. This resolution would prohibit President Trump from undertaking further defensive military activities against Iran and other external threats.

Congressman Lamborn issued the following statement:

"This dangerous resolution is rooted in cynical partisan politics rather than what's best for American national security. It is nothing more than a messaging ploy by the progressive wing of the House Democrats—it's a toothless resolution. The problem for them is that this cheap political stunt has been completely overcome by events—President Trump's decision has successfully restored deterrence for now. This strike against Suleimani was consistent with the 1,400 strikes in Iraq undertaken by the Obama administration without Congressional consultation or approval, and more importantly, with Article II of the Constitution and the 2002 AUMF. Less than a decade ago, President Obama, over the objections of Vice President Joe Biden, took decisive action to kill Osama Bin Laden without Congressional notice or approval. Democrats should stop listening to socialist talking points and Iranian propaganda and should stop mourning the death of a vicious terrorist who was plotting to kill more American citizens. This meaningless and disgraceful resolution does nothing but gives comfort and aid to Iran's leadership. We cannot tie the President's hands when he must act quickly and appropriately to defend our nation."
