Washington D.C. - Today, Congressman Doug Lamborn voted in favor of H.R. 3289, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019. This bill reaffirms and supports the high degree of autonomy and the fundamental rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong. It also requires the imposition of sanctions on individuals or entities responsible for human rights violations in Hong Kong. Congressman Lamborn issued the following statement upon voting for the bill:
"As China began the process of cracking down on Hong Kong and folding them into the totalitarian systems of the mainland PRC, Hong Kongers courageously rose up to protect their natural rights just as the American Founders did so many years ago. The people of Hong Kong are now being shot, beaten, and gassed in what is a preview of what the Chinese state is willing to do to free people who oppose their vision for the world. The valiant pro-democracy citizens of Hong Kong are waving American flags because they know that the United States is the exemplar of the freedoms they have come to cherish and now stand to lose. They desire freedom and prosperity: the blessings of liberty that so many Americans take for granted. We must stand with Hong Kong and speak out in favor of freedom."
