Lamborn Offers Amendments to NDAA to Cut Waste, Strengthen Defense

June 5, 2013

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) has submitted the following three amendments to the FY 2014 National Defense Authorization Act which is the House Armed Services Committee is scheduled to consider today:

  • an amendment to restrict funding for Threat Reduction Engagement until President Obama certifies that no participating country has violated the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Although the U.S. has never ratified the CTBT, since 2009 the Obama Administration has sent approximately $100 million to a CTBT organization that employs more than 200 staffers who work to promote the ratification of this treaty. To date, there is no evidence that the treaty has prevented nuclear proliferation. To view amendment click here.
  • an amendment to reduce funding for the Obama Administration's Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) until the administration certifies to Congress that plans to modernize our nucearl weapons are on track. In FY 2014, the Obama Administration has requested $424 million, much of it going to Russia, to help them contain low grade uranium and other materials used in so-called dirty bombs. Lamborn's amendment would limit the administration's ability to spend much of that money until the administration certifies that long-delayed plans to modernize the B61 nuclear warhead are on track. • an amendment to prohibit the Department of Defense from buying electric cars when comparable conventional cars are less expensive. The Department of Defense currently has a $20 million budget for buying 500 electric cars, at a cost of $400,000 per vehicle. To view amendment, click here.
