Washington

House Energy and Minerals Subcommittee Ranking Member Doug Lamborn (CO-5) released the following statement today regarding plans by the Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to cancel a proposed plan for expanded oil shale research development and demonstration leases:

"In Colorado, we have the potential to become the world leaders in oil shale development.

"Today’s action by the Secretary make it more likely that the billions of dollars companies are planning to spend on research could spend outside of Colorado.

"The thousands of jobs that would be created by oil shale development will be lost, in addition to many millions of tax and royalty dollars both to Colorado and the United States.

"Even worse, the potential recovery of what the average estimate is 800 billion barrels of oil products is seriously threatened. That is more oil than Saudi Arabia has and to lose that would tragically make America more dependent on foreign dictators.

"The loss of jobs, revenues, and energy caused by the actions of the Interior Secretary is dramatic and serious."-Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
