Lamborn Supports Passage of 2017 NDAA

December 2, 2016

Today, Congressman Doug Lamborn voted in support of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. The measure passed the House by a vote of 375 to 34, and now heads to the Senate for consideration. As a member of the Conference Committee responsible for finalizing this bill, Congressman Lamborn was pleased to see the inclusion of important amendments he inserted. Many of these provisions will affect our local interests in Colorado.

The 2017 NDAA:

  • Addresses critical needs in the Space, Missile Defense, Cyber Security, and Directed Energy realms, including growing the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center (JICSpOC)
  • Reverses the President's troop drawdown and starts to rebuild our military, adding 28,000 soldiers, 4,000 airmen, 3,000 Marines, and 1,000 sailors.
  • Provides our military with the largest pay raise they've seen in six years
  • Closes the readiness gap with a $9 billion boost in funding over the President's request
  • Supports small business innovation clusters, including classified meeting or processing spaces
  • Addresses transition challenges faced by advanced small businesses as they grow
  • Augments our efforts to counteract Iranian military, cyber warfare, ballistic missile, and terrorism undertakings
  • Elevates U.S. Cyber Command to a full Combatant Command
  • Prohibits the transfer of terrorists from Guantanamo Bay onto American soil
  • Increases funding for anti-tunneling efforts designed to combat terrorism and drug trafficking
  • Fully funds Israel's missile defense requirements

Additionally, many problematic provisions were omitted in this final Conference Committee version of the bill including one requiring women between the ages of 18 and 26 to register with the Selective Service System.

"It was an honor to serve on the 2017 Conference Committee finalizing the NDAA. Our brave men and women in uniform depend on us to provide the funds that keep our military the best in the world. Each year, those of us on the committee work hard to pass the best possible legislation to prioritize military readiness and provide for our servicemembers. The amendments I added to this year's NDAA will help address many important national security needs both here in Colorado and around the globe. I am pleased that the final version of this bill includes a pay raise for our troops."
