Washington D.C. - According to the Department of the Treasury, the national debt is now over $21 trillion. The Founders of our country warned about the dangers of a high national debt. Respected national security experts from multiple administrations have warned us that the national debt will be a long term threat to our national security if we don’t get it under control.
The problem of out-of-control spending and massive deficits has only gotten worse over the years as year after year the government has spent more than it takes in. The best way to put an end to this irresponsible and dangerous practice is to amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget. As the debt has increased so has public support for a balanced budget amendment. Eighty-five percent of Americans support the idea and believe it will greatly improve our economy.
“I was pleased to support H.J. Res. 2, the 'Balanced Budget Amendment,'" Cong. Lamborn said. "This amendment to the Constitution would force Congress to take the debt problem seriously by making a balanced budget the law of the land. Families and businesses all over Colorado balance their budgets every day and the federal government shouldn’t be the exception. By preventing Congress from spending money it doesn’t have, the Amendment would require the government to live within its means."
"Although it did not get enough votes to pass, the purpose behind the amendment is critical in securing the future of our nation for generations to come. The House of Representatives will continue to do its part to reverse decades of overspending. I am committed to getting America on a fiscally-responsible track. Constraining the government is something we must all support in order to better serve the public and provide a better future for generations to come.”
